TikTok has announced its intention to challenge a new law in the US that could result in a ban on the app.

The law, which was signed off by President Biden, requires Chinese-owned ByteDance to sell TikTok within nine months or face a ban due to concerns over data sharing with the Chinese government.

TikTok maintains that it would not share user data with China and believes the law is unjust.

The company has vowed to fight the ban in court.

The Senate approved a $95bn aid package for Ukraine and Israel on Tuesday, which includes provisions for a potential TikTok ban in the US.

In response, TikTok's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, released a video on the platform stating that they will challenge the ban in court, arguing that it infringes on their users' First Amendment rights to freedom of speech.

The company also released a statement expressing their belief that the law is unconstitutional and that they expect to prevail in court.

The US government is considering banning or forcing the sale of TikTok due to national security concerns.

This decision could face opposition from TikTok creators who rely on the platform for income, as well as China, which has previously expressed opposition to such a move.

The use of TikTok by federal employees is already banned in the US, except for limited exceptions for law enforcement, national security, and security research purposes.

Senate commerce committee chair Maria Cantwell stated that the proposed sale is not intended to punish ByteDance or TikTok, but rather to address security concerns.
