Thousands queue for Wimbledon tickets on first day of tournament

Wimbledon, one of the major sporting events where tickets can be bought on the day of play, started on Monday with thousands of fans queuing to get their hands on a golden ticket.

The queue for the show courts started on Sunday with some fans arriving more than 24 hours early.

The tournament allows non-ticket holders to queue for tickets, making it a democratic event.

This year's tournament will see the return of Russian and Belarusian players who were banned in 2022, but they have to sign a "nationality waiver" pledging not to support the Putin regime.

The tournament will also be without Sue Barker, who stepped down from broadcasting duties, and will be hosted by Clare Balding.

The BBC's coverage will be without Sir Andy Murray, who supports the cause of the environment group, Just Stop Oil, that has been targeting major sporting events.

Fans have been advised to pack their umbrellas, with spots of rain predicted on Monday afternoon.
