Thousands Anticipated to Protest EU Austerity Measures in Brussels

Thousands are set to demonstrate in Brussels against potential EU austerity steps, opposing potential EU financial rule changes that might enforce stricter spending limits and drive member states towards austerity.

EU finance ministers are debating changes to the Stability and Growth Pact, which restricts state debt and deficits. Originally paused during the pandemic, the pact requires public debt below 60% of GDP and deficits under 3%.

Latest EU data shows several countries, including Greece and Italy, with debt far exceeding the limit. With no consensus reached between key players like Germany and France, proposed reforms suggest drastic budget cuts for 14 states, totaling €45 billion next year.

The European Trade Union Confederation, representing 45 million workers, criticizes these reforms for risking jobs, wages, and public services, while hindering social and climate investments, potentially fueling far-right political gains.

Union protests aim to push for investment-friendly reforms and the retention of supportive mechanisms like the Recovery and Resilience Facility, a fund aiding the EU's economic recovery post-COVID.
