This Week, the Best Dressed Stars Wanted Glamour With Personality

Whether they were reintroducing themselves to the world or stepping into the spotlight for the first time, stars wanted clothes that said something about who they are.

Whether they were introducing themselves to a new audience, showcasing their reimagined style, or having their first big moment, stars this week opted for fashion that said something about who they are. Case in point: Lady Gaga may have gone method to portray infamous socialite Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci, but after months of living as someone else, Gaga used the film’s London premiere to remind the world that there’s only one Stefani Germanotta.

Gaga arrived at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in royal purple Gucci direct from Alessandro Michele’s pre-fall 2022 season runway. The first to wear a piece from the designer’s Love Parade show, which took place in Hollywood only days earlier, she offered her take on Gucci glamour, one that was worlds away from the retro-costuming she wears on screen. A vision in her plissé silk cape and crystal gloves, Gaga had fun vamping it up on the red carpet, showing off the look’s layers of transparent fabric as hundreds of photographers snapped pictures. With her Pleaser platform boots adding on several inches worth of height and an array of pieces from Tiffany & Co.’s ‘Schlumberger’ range providing plenty of bling, Gaga was in her element.

Similarly statement-making was the custom Carolina Herrera that Meghan Markle wore to the Salute To Freedom Gala in New York. The event honoring veterans was a stately affair, and the Sussexes dressed accordingly, but Markle’s dress reflected the codes of American sportswear rather than palace protocols. Bright red with a plunging neckline and form-fitting bodice, it spoke to Markle’s confidence. Worlds away from the clothes she wore while a full-time royal and the outfits she chose during her time as an actress, the Herrera piece represented the latest-and most exciting-chapter of her life.

Elsewhere, celebrities took a page from Markle’s book and aligned their fashions with their current roles. At Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards in New York, Megan Thee Stallion went understated and sexy in a curve-accentuating LBD from Mônot, while Taylor Swift talked up her new era on The Tonight Show in a carefree cap-sleeved minidress from Zuhair Murad. In Los Angeles, Cowboy Bebop newcomer Elena Satine attended the premiere of her Netflix series in bedazzled Giorgio Armani, worthy of a star claiming their place in the spotlight.
