This Mansion With Steven Spielberg As Neighbour Is Selling For $38 Million, But There's A Catch

A $38 million mansion near Steven Spielberg's home in New York is for sale, but it comes with a significant issue: it's uninhabitable.

The property lacks the necessary certificate of occupancy, which prohibits any new owner from residing there.

Notoriously celebrated real estate developer Harry Macklowe owns the mansion. He has been fined $2 million for violating local regulations by illegally clearing land and constructing without permits, compromising nearby wetlands. Despite this, criminal charges were not filed due to insufficient evidence of criminal intent.

An insider criticizes the exorbitant asking price, suggesting it's over-leveraged and pointing out that the house isn't even waterfront. They estimate its real value between $12 and $15 million.

The unlivable four-bedroom house features a pool and sits on 2.7 acres at 64 West End Avenue, East Hampton. Real estate agent Paul Brennan is overseeing the sale.

The current lack of a valid certificate of occupancy, rooted in unpaid fines and environmental concerns, makes it illegal to inhabit, as confirmed by East Hampton Village building inspector Thomas Preiato.
