Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes Begins 11-Year Prison Sentence

Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos, began serving an 11-year prison sentence on Tuesday at the Federal Correctional Institution in Bryan, Texas.

Holmes was convicted last year of fraud related to her failed blood testing start-up, which promised to use a revolutionary new technology to perform a wide range of tests on just a few drops of blood.

However, the technology never worked, and the company eventually collapsed in 2018.

Holmes had fought to remain free while her legal appeal works its way through the courts, but a judge rejected her request and ordered her to serve her sentence in a minimum-security prison.

Holmes will work alongside other inmates and may participate in educational programs or work-release opportunities.

Her former business partner, Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani, is already serving a 13-year prison sentence for his role in the scheme.
