The Five Challenges Confronting Italy's Economy in 2024

1. Economic Slowdown and Inflation: The Italian economy is expected to decelerate with inflation anticipated to surpass 2%. The Bank of Italy predicts a dip in GDP growth to 0.6%, and core inflation remains high at 3.1%. Cessation of VAT discounts on gas will likely contribute to another surge in inflation.

2. Declining Investment and Growth: Investments, notably in construction, have seen a sharp decrease, with GlobalData predicting a further 8.6% drop. Fitch Solutions anticipates lowered consumer spending and investment, suggesting GDP growth could cool to 0.3%.

3. Strained Labour Market: The ECB's potential interest rate maintenance could agitate business activity. A predominance of variable-rate loans exposes borrowers to higher costs amid rate increases, reducing disposable income for individuals and investment capacity for businesses. Unemployment is projected to escalate to 8.5%.

4. Consumer Struggles: A combination of reduced employment, sluggish wage growth, and increased mortgage rates, up to 4.3% from 3%, is set to squeeze consumer spending potential and disposable income.

5. Climate Hazards and G7 Leadership: Italy is grappling with more frequent climate calamities, like the severe floods in 2023. With a trend towards extreme weather in 2024, sectors such as health, energy, and agriculture could face significant upheavals. Amid these internal challenges, Italy assumes the G7 presidency amidst a grim international landscape, marked by persistent conflicts including the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in the Middle East.
