With debts exceeding £16 billion, Thames Water is navigating serious financial challenges, recently securing court approval for a £3 billion loan designed to sustain its operations into 2026. The current situation has compelled the company to conduct a detailed assessment of each takeover proposal.
Among the bidders, Castle Water, co-owned by Conservative Party treasurer Graham Edwards, is reportedly offering to inject around £4 billion into Thames Water in exchange for a majority stake.
Another contender, investment group Covalis, has proposed a strategy that may involve breaking up Thames Water and subsequently re-listing it on the stock market.
Additionally, infrastructure investment firm KKR, which already holds a minority stake in Northumbrian Water, is also in the running to acquire the utility company.
Thames Water indicated that five of the received bids outlined financial metrics, whereas one bid was focused on a minority equity option intended to establish partnerships with investors without detailing financial specifics.
The successful implementation of most bids is contingent upon securing further regulatory support and adjustments to existing frameworks.
Currently, discussions with interested parties are ongoing, although the company cautioned that there is no certainty that a binding equity proposal will emerge.
Additionally, Thames Water has placed its appeal to the UK’s competition watchdog on hold for approximately four months regarding an increase in consumer bills.
In December 2022, the water regulator Ofwat authorized Thames Water to raise bills by 35% by 2030, averaging an increase of £152 per household.
The deferral of the appeal aligns with the company's focus on navigating the takeover process.
Thames Water's chairman, Sir Adrian Montague, expressed appreciation for the constructive approach taken by Ofwat in permitting this pause.
