Thames Water Executives Acknowledge Inability to Meet £190m April Debt Repayment and Fall Short of Targets in Three-Year Plan

Thames Water executives have acknowledged that the company is unable to repay a £190 million debt due in April and will not achieve the goals of its three-year plan. The UK's largest water provider is under scrutiny by Ofwat, the industry regulator, because of its substantial £14.7 billion debt. The company points to regulatory caps on billing as a source of financial strain, as evidenced in a recent parliamentary committee hearing.

Sir Adrian Montague, Thames Water's new chair, and Alastair Cochran, joint interim CEO, disclosed the company's debt issues to MPs, emphasizing the need to renegotiate repayment terms with lenders or face budget cuts. The firm may also seek additional funds from investors, including reaching out to new investors if necessary.

Ofwat officials, also present at the hearing, labeled Thames Water as an extreme case due to its borrowing levels but conceded that the entire water sector's financial health is lacking.

After narrowly avoiding collapse earlier in the year, Thames Water has proposed a 40% hike in customer bills as part of a new plan to finance improvements. The company argues that while shareholders may initially invest in the system's enhancements, customers will ultimately bear the cost through increased bills to achieve better service.
