US President Threatens Apple with 25% Tariff on iPhones Not Made in America
Donald Trump warns Apple of potential tariffs if iPhones sold in the US are not manufactured domestically, amid ongoing trade tensions and negotiations
The US President has announced that Apple will be required to pay a tariff of at least 25% if the iPhones sold in the United States are not manufactured within the country.
This statement follows Apple's announcement that it would be producing iPhones for the American market in India.
As a result, Apple's stock price dropped by 2.5% on Wall Street, while the Dow Jones index fell by 0.7%, the S&P 500 declined by 0.8%, and the Nasdaq decreased by 1%.
The President stated that he expects iPhones sold in the US to be produced and assembled domestically, rather than in India or any other country.
If this is not the case, a tariff of at least 25% will be imposed on Apple.
Additionally, the President announced plans to impose a 50% tariff on the European Union due to stalled trade negotiations.
Apple has been shifting its manufacturing operations from China to India as an alternative production base, amid concerns over potential tariffs imposed by the US on Chinese goods.
The company has recently announced that most of its smartphones sold in the US will be sourced from India starting from the current quarter.
If the President's threat is carried out, Apple may need to reassess this strategy.
