Tata: Unite protest over treatment of Port Talbot steelworkers

Workers have criticised Tata Steel for its "shambolic" treatment of staff at the UK's largest steelworks.

Workers at the Port Talbot steelworks in the UK have protested against Tata Steel's handling of plans to end blast furnace production at the plant.

Tata Steel had informed unions that up to 3,000 jobs could be lost by March 2024, but the company postponed a formal announcement after a board meeting in Mumbai.

The UK government has pledged £500 million to support Tata's £1.25 billion plan to decarbonize its operations.

The plan includes replacing existing blast furnaces with greener arc furnaces, which are expected to be operational within three years of receiving regulatory and planning approval.
