These results have been hailed by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer as a "game changer" and a sign that Labour can win in places where they haven't traditionally done well. The turnout for both by-elections was lower than usual.

In Mid Bedfordshire, Labour secured a historic win, overturning a Tory majority of 24,664 votes. This was the largest numerical majority ever overturned in a by-election.

In Tamworth, there was a 23.9% swing from the Conservatives to Labour, marking the second-largest swing from the Tories to Labour in a by-election since 1945.

Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that these results showed Labour's ability to win in new areas and positioned the party as one of "national renewal."

The by-elections were triggered by the resignations of the previous MPs, with some controversy surrounding their departures. Former Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries resigned in Mid Bedfordshire after not being included in Boris Johnson's resignation honours list. In Tamworth, former Tory MP Chris Pincher resigned after losing an appeal against suspension for inappropriate behavior.

The Tories acknowledged that the results were influenced by lower turnout, with Conservative Chair Greg Hands mentioning the need to energize Conservative voters.

Right-wing Tory campaigners see the results as a wake-up call for the party to return to traditional conservative policies such as tax cuts and immigration reduction.

These by-election outcomes have raised questions about the Conservative Party's direction and strategy, especially in regions that traditionally supported them.
