The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled against Italy for the inhumane treatment of Sudanese migrants in 2016, ordering the country to pay €27,000 in damages.

The court supported the claims of four migrants who were forced to strip naked without privacy for a medical exam after being detained by Italian authorities. The ruling indicated that this treatment was unnecessary and excessive.

Additionally, the migrants reported enduring lengthy bus trips in extreme heat without adequate water or food, under constant police watch, and in a threatening environment, which the ECHR found distressing and humiliating, and in violation of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Italy is to compensate the four migrants for moral harm and costs. These individuals, now with international protection, no longer face deportation; three reside in Turin and one in Germany.

Moreover, the ECHR noted that one of the nine migrants was beaten during a removal attempt without any subsequent investigation, marking another Article 3 breach.

However, the ECHR dismissed the complaints of four other migrants, part of a larger group claiming to have been expelled upon arrival, due to insufficient evidence of Article 3 violations by Italy.
