Health board errors in Swansea Bay led to patients facing over five-year surgical waits, with a report highlighting unfair treatment due to waiting list mismanagement.

Three individuals were mistakenly removed from surgery lists for knee and hip procedures, prompting an investigation by the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales.

Ombudsman Michelle Morris identified these cases as clear injustices, reflecting broader concerns about waiting list management.

One patient endured severe pain for over five years awaiting hip surgeries, another had a nearly four-year wait for hip surgery against a one-month recommendation, and a third was wrongfully taken off a waiting list for shoulder surgery while hospitalized for a different condition.

The health board has apologized, affirming that affected patients have now been operated on and measures are in place to prevent future errors, including auditing and verifying existing waiting lists.

Despite high pressures on orthopaedic services, the board aims to reduce waits to under three years by the end of March. The Welsh Health Minister placed Swansea Bay under targeted intervention to address slow progress on reducing patient wait times.
