Gender equality advocates and experts have expressed shock and concern over these revelations.
Unsettling Findings
The nationwide survey, which included responses from 1,000 men and 1,000 women in the aforementioned age group, was conducted online between March 9th and 21st. It was commissioned by Plan International Germany, a children's aid organization, and its results are scheduled to be published by the Funke newspaper group.
Karsten Kassner, from the Federal Forum Men, an organization that works towards gender equality, commented on the survey results, calling them "shocking."
"It's problematic that a third of the surveyed men trivialize physical violence against women. This urgently needs to change," Kassner told the Funke newspapers.
Entrenched Gender Roles and Homophobia
The survey also shed light on entrenched traditional gender roles among young German men. Over half of the male respondents, 52%, opined that men should primarily be the breadwinners in a relationship, with their female partners chiefly responsible for managing the household.
Furthermore, the survey highlighted homophobic tendencies among respondents, with 48% of them stating that public displays of homosexuality made them feel uncomfortable and “disturbed.”
Alexandra Tschacher, a spokesperson for Plan International Germany, noted, “Traditional gender roles are still deeply ingrained in people’s minds.”
A National Issue
Violence against women is a pressing concern in Germany. Federal police data revealed that more than 115,000 women fell victim to partner violence in 2021, which equates to 13 women every hour. Moreover, 301 women lost their lives at the hands of their current or former partners in the same year.
Germany’s Justice Minister Marco Buschmann stated last year that he would advocate for legal reforms to impose stricter penalties for violence against women. Buschmann emphasized that such acts of violence should not be trivialized as “private tragedies.”
“Gender-based violence must be named as such and punished with the necessary severity,” he remarked.
A Call to Action
As society grapples with the disturbing findings of this survey, it is evident that there is an urgent need for cultural and legal reforms to address and rectify the attitudes and behaviors contributing to violence against women in Germany.
Educational programs, awareness campaigns, and legal reforms are vital in changing mindsets and ensuring the safety and dignity of women. Furthermore, it’s imperative to break down entrenched gender roles and work towards a more inclusive society that rejects violence and embraces equality and respect for all, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
