Survey by Unite union reveals inadequate toilet facilities for women workers

A survey by Unite union with over 12,000 women participants indicates a dire lack of clean and accessible toilets for female employees. Only 14% reported having some access to workplace toilets, with 1% citing no access at all. Nearly half of the women working as bus drivers only occasionally have toilet access, leading to health issues and sick leave for some. Workers report neglected maintenance, with toilets often filthy and sanitary bins left unemptied for extended periods. Only 17% find the facilities sometimes clean, with 2% never accessing hygienic conditions.

Unite's Alison Spenser-Scragg highlights the legal obligation employers have to provide clean toilets and condemns the widespread violation of this law. The union stresses the issue as a national problem, with a lack of "toilet dignity" at work. The issue also affects civil air transport workers, 27% of whom report limited access to clean facilities. General Secretary Sharon Graham calls the situation shameful and a significant workplace concern.
