The AI inaccurately depicted diverse and female figures as WWII Nazi soldiers and 19th-century US senators, sparking ridicule and backlash online.
In a staff memo, later disclosed by Semafor, Pichai acknowledged the AI's offensive and biased outputs, affirming the company's resolve to correct these issues.
While he recognized the imperfection of AI, especially in its nascent phase, he reiterated the company's commitment to meeting high standards without specifying when the problematic features would be restored.
Google's attempts to embed generative AI models into diverse digital services are part of a broader tech industry race, but these models, including Google's, have faced criticism for reinforcing racial and gender biases.
According to a blog post by Google's Prabhakar Raghavan, errors in Gemini's results were linked to over-adjustments made to display diversity without contextual sensitivity.
Beyond these immediate concerns, there is a growing awareness of AI's potential for widespread economic disruption and the propagation of large-scale disinformation with serious societal impacts.
