Sunak: UK Not Seeking Confrontation with Houthis

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has asserted that while the UK isn't seeking a conflict with the Houthi rebels in Yemen, it won't shy away from military action if the group persists with Red Sea assaults.

The recent joint UK-US nighttime operations aimed at Houthi military sites have been confirmed effective, although Sunak emphasized the need for self-defense.

Labour's Sir Keir Starmer supports these targeted strikes, which involve multiple RAF aircraft and follow increased Houthi attacks on commercial shipping. The Yemeni government in Riyadh also condemns the Houthi aggression.

The sustained attacks between the UK, US, and Houthis raise concerns of an escalating situation with potential civilian casualties and anti-Western sentiment.

The UK insists that any military action serves to protect navigation freedom and that further Houthi weapon supply and financial support will be targeted through sanctions.

The legal basis for the strikes has been published, suggesting compliance with international law. While Sir Ed Davey of the Liberal Democrats questions the future direction of UK's military involvement, a general debate is scheduled in the Commons without a vote. Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron plans to visit the region soon.
