Sunak Cancels Meeting with Greek PM Amid Elgin Marbles Dispute

Rishi Sunak scrapped a planned meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis amid tensions over the Elgin Marbles.

The cancellation by the UK's No 10 came after Mr. Mitsotakis expressed disappointment, declining a proposed meet with Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden.

The squabble ignited after the Greek PM advocated for the return of the Elgin Marbles to Greece on the BBC. These ancient artefacts, housed in the British Museum, were transported to Britain in the 19th century by Lord Elgin.

The Greek government expressed surprise and discontent with the meeting's abrupt cancellation, emphasizing the longstanding ties between the countries.

Despite the setback, Mitsotakis met with Labour leader Keir Starmer and scheduled to return to Greece after his morning engagements. The British government insists the artefacts belong in the UK, while sources suggest the Greek PM is puzzled and upset by the ordeal.
