Sumo Wrestling Finds a Surprising Fan Base in Britain

The centuries-old Japanese sport attracts new audiences through cultural exchange and media coverage.

Sumo wrestling is gaining unexpected popularity in Britain, where live tournaments, television broadcasts, and social media have introduced the sport to a growing number of fans.

Organizers credit the surge in interest to Japan’s cultural outreach and the universal appeal of athletic spectacle.

Experts say the trend reflects Britain’s increasingly diverse sporting landscape and a broader curiosity about international traditions.
