Suella Braverman: Shapps won't back home secretary's language on policing

Cabinet Minister Grant Shapps has distanced himself from Home Secretary Suella Braverman's comments that criticized police ahead of a pro-Palestinian rally in London.

Braverman's labeling of protesters as "hate marchers" and accusations of police double standards have led to calls for her removal. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace refrained from commenting on her future, indicating cabinet appointments are the Prime Minister's decision.

Braverman's article in The Times, which was published without Downing Street's desired edits, accused police of bias and has been criticized by various officials, including Chancellor Jeremy Hunt. The article led to increased scrutiny after the Metropolitan Police reported aggression from counter-protesters and made over 100 arrests.

Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf, Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford, and Labour's Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper have called for Braverman's resignation.

Cooper attributed the unrest during the rally to Braverman's "attack" on the Metropolitan Police's operational independence and impartiality, questioning her credibility as Home Secretary.

Downing Street is currently investigating the circumstances of the article's publication, while Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has so far supported Braverman.
