During the fierce Storm Babet, Coastguard helicopters successfully evacuated 45 workers from the Stena Spey, a North Sea drilling platform operated by Stena Drilling. This evacuation became necessary when four of the platform's eight anchors detached due to the severe weather.
The platform, situated 146 miles (235 kilometers) east of Aberdeen, faced challenging conditions with strong waves. Thankfully, all 89 personnel on board have been safely accounted for, and there have been no reported injuries.
In response to the situation, non-essential workers were transferred to nearby platforms and the Shetland Islands, specifically Sumburgh, while 44 essential personnel remain on the "stable" platform.
Despite the anchor detachment, Stena Drilling emphasized that the well on the platform remains secure. Concerned relatives can contact a dedicated response number at 01224 455199 for information and support.
The incident occurred at approximately 06:45, and Stena Drilling has initiated a coordinated response through its incident response team, working diligently to ensure the safety of personnel on the platform during this challenging weather event.
