Steel: Tata listening to Port Talbot concern, say unions

Tata Steel and unions have held a positive meeting to discuss the future of the Port Talbot steelworks.

Unions were concerned about Tata's plan to close blast furnaces, potentially costing 3,000 jobs, in favor of an electric furnace for decarbonization.

An independent report recommending a longer transition and fewer job losses was presented and will be considered by Tata.

The meeting eased initial shock, with Tata showing a willingness to negotiate.

The plant is Wales's largest carbon emitter, and Tata secured a £500 million UK government grant for its £1.25 billion decarbonization plan.

Tata Steel remains committed to greener steelmaking and will engage in consultations with unions after considering the independent report.
