The depot in question supplies fuel to Russian nuclear bomber planes, underscoring the strategic implications of the attack.
Governor Roman Busargin of the Saratov region reported that two firefighters tragically lost their lives while combatting the ensuing blaze.
The targeted facility, known as the 'Kristal' oil complex, experienced a massive fire and several explosions after the strike.
According to the Ukrainian military, this strike represents a significant impediment to Russian strategic aviation capabilities, particularly impacting their operations against Ukrainian cities.
Reports from Russian media have affirmed that the fire occurred at an oil facility, and unverified footage circulating on social media depicts a large conflagration with intense orange flames, accompanied by smoke plumes billowing into the night sky.
While Governor Busargin acknowledged a comprehensive drone attack on both Saratov and Engels, he emphasized there were no additional casualties and assured that sufficient measures were in place to contain the fire.
In response, Russia's Ministry of Defense stated that overnight, a total of 11 Ukrainian drones were neutralized over the Saratov region, alongside 21 destroyed over other territories including the Azov Sea.
The Engels air base is of strategic importance, situated approximately 450 miles southeast of Moscow and at a considerable distance from the Ukrainian border.
This isn't the first instance of a security breach at the base; a similar drone-related incident resulted in fatalities among Russian air force personnel in December 2022.
Further complicating matters, Ukraine's military reported that Russia launched a formidable assault involving 64 drones the same night.
Ukrainian air forces succeeded in downing 41 of these drones, and a number of 'imitator drones' failed to reach Ukrainian targets.
The utilization of drones in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine seems to be intensifying, with military analysts suggesting that these unmanned aerial vehicles may be playing a more pivotal role than conventional troops.
Meanwhile, in Eastern Ukraine, Russian military forces continue to make headway, with recent advancements reported in the northwest region of Toretsk, Donetsk province.
The Institute for the Study of War highlighted that this progress follows a period of increased Russian offensive operations in the area.
In a related development, it is reported that North Korean troops have joined Russian units in an attempt to reclaim the region of Kursk, though they have reportedly encountered substantial casualties.
