British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has insisted that his landmark visit to China will generate tangible benefits for the United Kingdom’s economy, as he prepared to meet President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Starmer described the trip to the world’s second-largest economy as an opportunity to expand commercial relations, encourage investment and open new markets for British firms at a time when global economic conditions are shifting.

Arriving in the Chinese capital as the first UK leader to visit in eight years, Starmer said that engaging with China is in Britain’s national interest and that economic cooperation could bring “significant opportunities” for British companies across sectors including services, advanced manufacturing and technology.

He stressed that London does not have to choose between safeguarding national security and pursuing economic partnership, and pledged to approach discussions with “clear-eyed” realism about geopolitical risks and differences.

The prime minister’s agenda includes meetings with senior Chinese officials as well as President Xi, and is supported by a large delegation of business leaders keen to explore market access and trade prospects.

Starmer’s government has framed the visit as part of a broader effort to reset bilateral relations after years of strain, while ensuring that national security guardrails are maintained alongside economic engagement.

Despite domestic criticism and concerns about issues such as espionage, human rights and strategic dependencies, Starmer reiterated that strengthening ties with Beijing — particularly in services and innovative industries where the UK is competitive — can help support British growth and jobs.

His comments reflect a pragmatic approach to foreign policy and economic diplomacy as relations between Western capitals and Beijing evolve in the face of global challenges.
