Starmer Calls on Iran to Refrain from Attacking Israel

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer held a rare phone conversation with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian. This 30-minute call aimed at de-escalating Middle East tensions following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Starmer urged Iran to refrain from attacking Israel and focus on diplomatic solutions.
In a rare diplomatic move, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer engaged in a 30-minute phone conversation with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The call is part of international efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The UK, US, France, and Germany issued a joint statement urging Iran and its allies to cease threats against Israel.

Starmer emphasized the need for careful consideration and a commitment to diplomatic talks, advocating a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza.

He also confronted issues of foreign detainees and Iran's alleged destabilizing actions, including aiding Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The conversation is significant as it underscores the value of a British embassy in Tehran, a step not many countries, including the US, have undertaken.
