Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, has accused Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of lying and breaching the ministerial code by claiming that Labour's spending plans would result in a two thousand pound tax increase for everyone.

This charge arose during an ITV debate where Sunak alleged that 'independent Treasury officials' had costed Labour's policies.

Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves joined Starmer in condemning Sunak's statements, which they regarded as dishonest.

Labour responded by releasing a letter from Treasury’s Permanent Secretary, James Bowler, refuting Sunak’s claims and reminding ministers not to attribute costs incorrectly to civil service calculations.

Sunak tweeted the figure again and backed his stance, while Labour maintained that all their plans are fully costed without further tax increases on working people.

Both leaders are set to attend the 80th D-day anniversary commemoration in Normandy.
