Spain Prepared to Finalize Agreement on Gibraltar's Post-Brexit Status as David Cameron Plans Meeting with Spanish Counterpart

Spain is poised to finalize an agreement on Gibraltar's post-Brexit status, according to the Spanish Foreign Minister, who will soon meet with David Cameron to negotiate the future of the British territory.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares expects to sign the agreement on Wednesday following discussions in Brussels. Gibraltar, a British-governed territory since the 1700s, has had contested border operations since the UK's EU departure.

Despite the 2016 referendum showing Gibraltar's overwhelming preference to remain in the EU, it was not included in the final Brexit deal.

A temporary agreement kept Gibraltar in certain EU arrangements, awaiting a permanent solution, with Spain overseeing border controls. Late in 2022, the European Commission and Spain proposed a deal to maintain an open land border, promoting unrestricted movement.
