Sir Ben Ainslie, the most successful Olympic sailor of all time, was robbed at knifepoint in Barcelona ahead of the America's Cup qualification races.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when a group threatened him with a knife and took his Rolex watch worth twenty thousand euros.

Ainslie, 47, confirmed the theft in a statement and mentioned that the crime is being handled by local authorities.

He praised Barcelona as a fantastic host city despite the opportunistic crime.

His team, Ineos Britannia, and the regional Catalonian police have been contacted for further details.

Ainslie will begin racing in the Louis Vuitton Cup on Thursday, which will determine the challenger for defending champions New Zealand in October.
