Shamima Begum loses initial bid to challenge citizenship removal at Supreme Court

Shamima Begum, originally from Britain, lost her attempt to appeal against the UK government's decision to revoke her citizenship at the Supreme Court.

The government had removed her British citizenship in 2019, citing national security concerns, after she left London at 15 to join ISIS in Syria. Her appeal was unanimously rejected by the Court of Appeal earlier.

Despite the harsh nature of the decision, the court found it lawful. Begum's legal team argued that her removal was unlawful, failing to consider if she was a victim of trafficking.

She remains stateless in a Syrian camp under dire conditions, which her lawyers describe as inhumane and akin to torture. Begum, who married an ISIS member and lost all three of her children, has admitted to regretting her decision to join ISIS. The Home Office insists on prioritizing the UK's security.
