Second Day of Junior Doctors' Strike Continues

Junior doctors' strike continues into its second day, with concerns over unresolved pay disputes. Simultaneously, they are preparing for a historic six-day strike beginning January 3rd. As NHS faces a dire winter, the strike initiated on December 20th is set to last 72 hours.

This industrial action was announced by BMA after discussions with the government stalled. Health Secretary Victoria Atkins cautions that patient discharges may be delayed due to the strike, particularly affecting the Christmas period. She emphasizes the importance of negotiations, hindered by ongoing picketing.

Conservative MP Dr. Caroline Johnson criticized the timing and morality of the strike, while BMA urges the government to propose a solution to prevent further strikes.

They argue that the 3% government offer, in addition to the 9% rise suggested by an independent body, does not compensate for years of below-inflation increases, demanding a full pay restitution.

The government dismisses this as unaffordable, suggesting a 35% increase. Acas offers to mediate the standoff. NHS assures that emergency services will continue, but routine care will suffer.

While strikes are also planned in Wales and possibly Northern Ireland, Scottish junior doctors have reached an agreement. English consultants and SAS doctors have tentative deals being voted on.

Amidst these events, Atkins has prompted a review of NHS salary recommendations for 2024/25.
