The search operation is still being treated as a "search and rescue" mission, and efforts are focused on finding the submarine and its crew.

The family of a London businessman and his son stuck in the submarine have said their "sole focus" is the rescue of those on board.

The search was relocated after a Canadian P-3 aircraft detected underwater noises during a search for the submersible that vanished while taking five people down to the wreck.

The missing submarine is carrying a Pakistani-born global board member of the Prince's Trust charity, his son, and two others.

The family has requested privacy and expressed hope for the safe return of their loved ones.

Three C-17 transport planes from the US military have been used to move commercial submersible and support equipment from New York to Newfoundland to aid in the search for the Titan submarine.

The Canadian military has provided a patrol aircraft and two surface ships, including one that specializes in dive medicine, and dropped sonar buoys to listen for any sounds from the Titan.

The Titan submarine, with a four-day oxygen supply, went to sea about 6am on Sunday with the CEO of the company leading the expedition, a British adventurer, two members of a Pakistani business family, and a Titanic expert onboard.

Two communication systems, text messages and safety pings, stopped about an hour and 45 minutes after the submerged.

There are only two possibilities, either they lost all power or the ship developed a hull breach and imploded instantly, both of which are hopeless.

The submersible had seven backup systems to return to the surface, including sandbags and lead pipes that drop off and an inflatable balloon, one system designed to work even if everyone aboard is unconscious.
