UK Government Ultimatum Forces Scottish Government to Water Down Cans and Bottle Recycling Scheme

The Scottish government is set to accept a UK government ultimatum to water down their can and bottle recycling scheme, which had planned to include glass bottles.

The UK government's demand has caused controversy, with Scottish ministers accusing them of "deliberate sabotage." The ultimatum means that tens of millions of glass bottles in Scotland will not be recycled, instead ending up as litter or general waste.

The Scottish scheme, which aims to charge a 20p deposit for bottles and cans, is now set to be aligned with a similar scheme in England that only covers plastic bottles and cans.

The Scottish ministers are currently working on how to adapt to the UK government's demand to drop glass from the scheme.
