Christina McKelvie, a Scottish Government minister and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has passed away at the age of 57 following a battle with secondary breast cancer.

Her partner, SNP MSP Keith Brown, announced her death, stating that she died in the morning.

McKelvie had taken leave from her position as Minister for Drug Policy last year to undergo treatment.

In a statement, Brown emphasized her cherished role as a mother and grandmother and described her as someone who brought positivity and enthusiasm to every situation.

He noted her pride in her working-class origins in Easterhouse, Glasgow, remarking that she had never imagined serving as a government minister.

First Minister John Swinney expressed his deep sorrow at McKelvie's passing, reflecting on her qualities as a compassionate and supportive friend and colleague.

He recognized her dedication to addressing social inequalities, her advocacy for Scottish independence, and her long-standing commitment to social justice over nearly two decades at the Scottish Parliament.

The flags at the Scottish Parliament, known as Holyrood, will fly at half-mast as a tribute to McKelvie.

Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone conveyed her heartfelt condolences to McKelvie's family, describing her as a passionate advocate and effective parliamentarian.

Johnstone recalled McKelvie’s welcoming nature when she first entered the Scottish Parliament in 2011 and highlighted her role in supporting the annual Wear It Pink campaign aimed at raising breast cancer awareness.

In her statement, Johnstone noted McKelvie's gratitude towards the organizations that supported her during her cancer treatment.

Plans for further tributes in Parliament are anticipated in the days ahead.
