Benton criticized the inquiry as unfair and lacking transparency, denying any wrongdoing. Following his suspension as a Conservative MP in April, he now serves as an independent. The controversy may prompt a by-election in his constituency if the suspension is enacted.
The committee asserted that Benton offered to influence ministers and share confidential information for payment, severely tarnishing the Commons’ reputation.
Benton contested the committee's findings and the accuracy of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards' investigation, planning to lodge a formal complaint and appeal through the Independent Expert Panel.
The committee reminded that MPs have the right to appeal any conduct violation findings to the IEP, which is composed of non-MP experts. The subsequent suspension, if supported by a Commons vote, could lead to a recall petition and potential by-election, posing a challenge for the Conservatives in a historically Labour-held area.
