Santander has resolved a significant technical issue affecting its banking services, which left numerous customers unable to access their accounts.

The bank has publicly apologized for the inconvenience experienced by its clients, assuring them that no one would be left financially disadvantaged as a result of the outages.

Customers reported being unable to make payments or transfer funds between accounts during the service disruption.

The bank's website acknowledged the problems, which included issues with mobile banking, telephone banking, technical difficulties in its branch network, and card payment processing.

However, online banking services were reportedly functioning normally.

A spokesperson for Santander expressed gratitude for customer patience and confirmed that the issues had now been addressed, stating, "We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused this afternoon while we fixed the problems affecting some of our banking services.

These have now been restored and are working normally."

Frustration among customers was evident on social media platforms, where users detailed difficulties with payments and access to their accounts via the bank’s app.

One user described the impact of the outage on their ability to commute home, voicing concerns over the frequency of such issues and demanding compensation for the inconvenience experienced.

Service status reporting platform Downdetector indicated that customers began reporting issues with Santander’s services around midday on Thursday, with over 600 reports logged, the majority related to payment failures.

In a broader context, data released by the Treasury Committee highlighted a persistent issue within the UK's banking sector, noting that nine of the country’s largest banks and building societies accumulated over 33 days of unplanned technical outages over the past two years.

Recent service interruptions have also affected other major banks in the UK. Last week, customers of TSB, Nationwide, First Direct, and Lloyds Banking Group faced similar access issues.

Barclays has announced it expects to pay between £5 million and £7.5 million in compensation following a series of outages earlier in the year.

Barclays reported a total of 33 incidents that resulted in 93 hours of total downtime.

Other banks have also indicated financial losses due to service disruptions; NatWest reported over £348,000 in customer payouts associated with 13 incidents leading to 194 hours of outages, while HSBC compensated customers with £232,697 after 32 incidents resulted in 176 hours of operational disruption.
