Santander has resolved a series of technical issues that left a number of customers unable to access their banking services.

Reports from users on social media indicated a range of problems, including difficulties logging into accounts, using the bank's mobile application, and making payments or transferring funds.

The issues began around midday on Thursday, with a significant number of reports focusing on problems related to payments.

In response to the outage, Santander issued an apology for the disruption and assured customers that those financially impacted by the incident would not be left out of pocket.

A spokesperson for the bank stated, "We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused this afternoon while we fixed the problems affecting some of our banking services.

These have now been restored and are working normally.

We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and can reassure them that any customer financially impacted will not be left out of pocket."

The incident is part of a larger trend of system outages affecting several of the UK's major banks.

Data released by the Treasury Committee revealed that there have been over 33 days’ worth of unplanned technological and system outages across nine of the UK’s largest banks and building societies within the past two years.

This has raised concerns among experts regarding the banking sector's ability to adapt to modern technology while maintaining the integrity of their often complex legacy systems.

According to the bank’s website, the specific issues included malfunctions in mobile and telephone banking, problems within branch networks, as well as card payment issues.

Service status website Downdetector indicated that the number of reports of service disruptions spiked notably during the peak period of the outage, highlighting a growing concern over the reliability of banking services in a digital age.
