Sam to pass East of Bermuda; Victor less likely to become hurricane- DDM

As of Friday morning, October 1, 2021, Category 4 hurricane Sam was the most powerful storm on the planet, packing 145-mph winds and churning 450 miles to the south-southeast of Bermuda and moving north-northwest at 15 mph.

Tropical storm conditions are possible on Bermuda, where a tropical storm watch was in effect.

Swells generated by Sam will impact the northern Leeward Islands and the Greater Antilles, including Puerto Rico, during the next few days, the National Hurricane Centre has said.

Swells are expected to reach Bermuda and the Bahamas by Friday.

Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said conditions are unfavourable for Tropical Storm Victor to develop into a hurricane.

Sam

As of the 4:00 AM AST advisory, Hurricane Sam was located about 450 miles SSE of Bermuda. It is moving to the north near 15 mph. A gradual turn to the north-northeast and northeast is forecast over the weekend.

Sam is forecast to pass east of Bermuda early Saturday and likely east of southeast Newfoundland Tuesday. Winds are estimated near 145 mph and gradual weakening is likely later today into Saturday. Please see our latest advisory for more information.

According to the DDM, at this time there are no watches or warnings for the [British] Virgin Islands; however, persons must continue to monitor the Atlantic in case of any changes with the hurricane.

Victor

As of the 4:00 AM AST advisory, Tropical Storm Victor was located about 520 miles SW of the southern Cabo Verde Islands. It is moving to the west-northwest near 10 mph.

A gradual turn to the northwest and north is expected over the next several days. This will keep Victor over the open Atlantic. Winds have increased to 65 mph and some additional strengthening is possible over the next 12 to 24 hours followed by a gradual weakening trend.

Victor is the 20th named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season. Only one name – Wanda – remains on the regular list of storm names. A new supplemental list of names will be used if the regular list of names is exhausted before the season ends.
