Sainsbury's and Asda face legal action over 'unlawful' land agreements

Sainsbury's and Asda have been told by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to stop using "unlawful" land agreements that prevent rival stores from opening nearby.

14 June 2023 · 04:23 UTC

The CMA found that Sainsbury's breached the Groceries Market Investigation (Controlled Land) Order 2010 18 times, while Asda did it 14 times.

The regulator stated that such restrictions are against the law, cause real harm to shoppers, and will not be tolerated.

Both Sainsbury's and Asda have agreed to remove the outstanding restrictions identified by the CMA.

The CMA previously reprimanded Tesco and Waitrose for similar actions.
