Labour Mayor of London Under Pressure to Expand Clean Air Scrappage Scheme

The Labour Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is facing pressure from within his own party to expand a scrappage scheme that is intended to help people affected by a new clean air zone in London.

Several Labour MPs and borough leaders have expressed concerns that the existing £110 million scheme does not cover enough people whose vehicles will be liable to pay a daily charge of £12.50 once the zone expands to cover the whole of Greater London on August 29.

They have called for the scheme to be widened to provide further support for parents and carers, more small businesses to be made eligible, and for the grace period for drivers who have booked by a certain date to retrofit their vehicles to be reviewed.

The Mayor has said that around £20 million of the £110 million scheme has been allocated so far.
