Rwanda bill: House of Lords inflicts further defeats on government plan

The UK government has faced ten defeats in the House of Lords regarding its Rwanda bill, which aims to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda by legislating its status as a safe country.

The Lords amended the bill to allow courts to examine Rwanda's safety and to enable legal challenges on wrongful adult classification.

Despite these setbacks and anticipated Commons opposition to their amendments, the Lords also sought to protect individuals who had supported British forces or were modern slavery victims from being sent to Rwanda.

The government, enjoying a majority in the Commons, is expected to reverse the Lords' amendments.
