Russian forces have reportedly regained control of the town of Sudzha in the western Kursk region, according to statements from the Moscow Ministry of Defence.

This development marks a notable advance in Russia's ongoing efforts to reclaim territory lost to Ukrainian forces during a surprise attack last summer.

Following the initial Ukrainian incursion in August 2022, which aimed to distract Russian military efforts focused on eastern Ukraine, Moscow has now declared that it is in the final stages of ousting Ukrainian troops from the Kursk region.

The recent military actions have also led to the recapture of two additional settlements, Melovoi and Podol, alongside Sudzha.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his generals to expedite the military operations in Kursk, suggesting a strategic delay in negotiations for a ceasefire while he aims to secure as much territory as possible.

During a televised meeting with military commanders, Putin emphasized the urgency of decisively defeating Ukrainian forces entrenched in the region and mentioned the importance of establishing a security zone along the state border.

Claims from Russia indicate a significant reduction in Ukrainian-held territory in Kursk, diminished from approximately 500 square miles to about 77 square miles in recent months.

General Valery Gerasimov, head of Russia's General Staff, stated that Russian troops have expelled Ukrainian forces from over 86% of their previously held land in the region, totaling 24 settlements and 100 square miles regained in just five days.

Ukrainian forces are reportedly reassessing their positions, with indications that they are withdrawing to avoid heavy losses.

This move is consistent with their overall strategy, which included using Kursk as a potential bargaining chip in future negotiations.

Meanwhile, the United States has reiterated its commitment to support Ukraine through resumed weapons supplies and intelligence sharing.

This support follows Ukraine's expression of readiness to endorse a ceasefire proposal during discussions held in Saudi Arabia.

The Kremlin has indicated that it is analyzing the results of those talks and awaiting further details from US representatives.
