Russia Expels British Diplomats Amid Ongoing Spying Allegations
Moscow accuses UK diplomats of espionage, prompting a reciprocal response from London.
The Russian government has ordered the expulsion of one British diplomat and the spouse of another, citing allegations of espionage.
According to a statement from the Federal Security Service (FSB), the individuals were accused of engaging in intelligence activities while posing as embassy officials in Moscow.
This development, reported by the Russian news agency Tass, follows a series of diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
The UK Foreign Office has categorically rejected the accusations, labeling them as 'malicious and baseless.' A spokesperson noted that this situation is not unprecedented, indicating that Russia has previously made similar claims against British diplomatic staff.
Both countries have engaged in a pattern of reciprocal expulsions in recent years.
In February, the British Foreign Office revoked the accreditation of a Russian diplomat, which was described by Foreign Secretary David Lammy as part of the UK's commitment to confront Russia's actions.
This decision came as a response to the earlier expulsion of a British diplomat from Russia on allegations of espionage last November, which the UK government also deemed unfounded.
These recent expulsions occur in the context of ongoing international scrutiny surrounding espionage activities attributed to Russian operatives.
Just last week, six individuals linked to a Russian proxy spy ring, known as the 'Minions,' were found guilty in the UK. This group was implicated in operations considered to be among the largest and most intricate espionage efforts uncovered on British soil.
Among the convicted were three Bulgarians, who were found guilty of conducting surveillance on an 'industrial scale,' endangering lives and national security.
The sentences for these individuals are expected to be pronounced in May, alongside their ringleader and other associates who admitted their involvement.
In response to the diplomatic expulsion, a representative from Downing Street remarked that such actions from President Putin are expected, reiterating that they will not shift the UK's focus on supporting Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict in the region.
