Russia and Ukraine Deploy Swarms of Drones in Cross-Border Activity

On Sunday, Ukraine and Russia exchanged drone attacks across their borders, escalating hostilities. In Odesa, a Russian drone strike killed an individual, while Ukraine targeted a Russian airfield. Ukrainian forces claimed to have shot down 20 drones and a missile overnight, with debris from drones downed over Odesa causing a deadly residential fire.

Russia's defense ministry reported their air defenses intercepted 35 Ukrainian drones above Lipetsk, Volgograd, and Rostov, without detailing any damage or specific targets. Unconfirmed reports from Ukrainska Pravda suggest a Ukrainian operation struck Morozovsk airfield in Rostov.

Rostov's governor confirmed drone attacks repelled near Morozovsk, with most drones destroyed, but Russian military bloggers claimed a bomber sustained minor damage there. Morozovsk hosts Russia's cutting-edge Su-34 bombers.

Despite both Moscow and Kyiv denying intentional civilian strikes in the ongoing conflict since February 2022, both have hit military-essential infrastructure. Prior to Sunday's skirmish, Ukraine reported downing 30 Russian drones on Saturday, and Russia claimed to have shot down 26 Ukrainian drones over Crimea on Friday.
