Ultra-marathon runner Joasia Zakrzewski has been banned for 12 months by UK Athletics for using a car during the 2023 GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool 50-mile race.

Zakrzewski, who initially accepted a medal and trophy for finishing third, was later found to have traveled by car for about 2.5 miles of the race. Tracking information revealed this violation.

Zakrzewski claimed she had informed officials of her use of a car and completed the race on a non-competitive basis. However, an independent disciplinary panel noted that she did not act in accordance with someone finishing a race non-competitively. She retained the trophy and did not mention her non-competitive completion on social media.

A 47-year-old GP originally from Dumfries, Scotland, Zakrzewski now resides near Sydney, Australia. She has an impressive running career, including setting a world record distance of 255 miles in the Taipei Ultramarathon in Taiwan, winning medals in the IAU World 100km Championships, and representing Team Scotland in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She also holds records such as the Scottish 24-hour record and the British 200km record.
