The Swiss government is considering revising its longstanding neutrality policy by intensifying military cooperation with NATO, according to the Blick news outlet.

A report, to be presented by the Federal Department of Defense on August 29, suggests that closer cooperation with NATO could strengthen Switzerland’s defense capabilities.

The report maintains that NATO remains the security benchmark for Europe.

While not recommending NATO membership, the commission proposed 'secret agreements' for defense against long-range missiles and cyber threats.

The experts also suggested revising the Federal Act on War Materiel, which currently prohibits direct delivery of Swiss tanks to Ukraine.

This proposed shift has met with opposition from both the Left and the Swiss People's Party.

The policy of neutrality has been questioned, notably by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who accused Switzerland of adopting an openly hostile stance by supporting Western sanctions on Russia.

A March poll indicates 91% of the Swiss population supports remaining neutral.
