State of Palestine Seeks to Join UN Court Case Accusing Israel of Genocide

Palestinian officials have applied for the 'State of Palestine' to join South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. The request emphasizes that Israel's military operations aim to eradicate Palestinian society and infrastructure. This move follows a previous 2018 case filed by the Palestinian Authority against the US over the embassy's relocation to Jerusalem.

Palestinian officials, representing the 'State of Palestine,' submitted a request to join South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

The request highlights Israel's ongoing military operations as an effort to eradicate Palestinian society and its institutions.

Signed by Ammar Hijazi from the Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry, the request emphasizes the severe impacts on Gaza's hospitals, mosques, churches, and other essential infrastructures.

South Africa had initially filed this case in late 2023, citing Israel's breaches of the genocide convention.

Israel denies these allegations, maintaining its operations target Hamas following the October 7 attacks.

The ICJ has so far issued preliminary orders to prevent deaths, increase aid, and stop the offensive in Rafah.

The timeline for the court's decision on Palestine's request is uncertain.

Notably, the Palestinians have a history with the ICJ, including a pending 2018 case against the US regarding the embassy relocation to Jerusalem.
