The Royal Mint has announced the forthcoming release of a commemorative coin celebrating the life and career of John Lennon, coinciding with the 85th anniversary of his birth.

The coin features a design that showcases a portrait of Lennon, drawn from a photograph taken by renowned music photographer Bob Gruen, depicting him in a side profile on the roof of his New York penthouse.

Accompanying the portrait are the words 'Imagine' on one side, referencing Lennon’s influential single and album of the same name.

This coin is part of the Royal Mint's ongoing 'music legends' series, which honors prominent singers and songwriters.

The coin has been designed by Henry Gray, who has placed Lennon’s portrait prominently at the center of the piece.

Rebecca Morgan, the director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, emphasized the significance of honoring Lennon, describing him as one of the greatest singers and songwriters.

She noted that his legacy as an artist and activist is still celebrated globally, and the coin serves as a memorable tribute.

The coins will be available for purchase through the Royal Mint's website starting at 9am on March 17, with prices beginning at £18.50. Various editions, including color variations and those made from precious metals, are expected to be on offer.

John Lennon, who passed away in 1980 at the age of 40, continues to have a lasting impact on music and culture.

Recently, The Beatles received a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance for their song 'Now And Then', a track completed decades after its initial recording from a Lennon demo from the 1970s.

Lennon's son, Sean, accepted the award on behalf of the group, highlighting the enduring importance of The Beatles' music in contemporary society.
