Rolls-Royce targets a four-fold increase in profits within the next five years, an ambitious goal set by CEO Tufan Erginbilgic.

Erginbilgic, who took the helm in January and came from BP, intends to turn the company's focus to high-performing sectors including widebody jet engines for Airbus, business aviation, defense, and power systems, while divesting from its electric aircraft division to generate up to £1.5 billion. Additionally, Rolls-Royce could re-enter the narrowbody jet market through strategic partnerships, utilizing its advanced UltraFan technology.
The profit boost is expected primarily from its civil aerospace sector, aiming to increase profit margins from 2.5% to 15-17% by cutting manufacturing and repair costs, improving pricing strategies, and overhauling low-margin contracts. The goal is to align engine deliveries, estimated at 300-350 units annually, with the production rates of major clients like Airbus and Boeing.
The new strategy has resulted in a dramatic increase in Rolls-Royce shares, rising 161% year-to-date.
Analysts see this move as a significant cultural shift for Rolls-Royce, as the company shifts from prioritizing market share to focusing on profitability. Erginbilgic reaffirmed the company's commitment to maintaining profitable growth in market share.
On the strategy for the narrow-body market, Rolls-Royce is open to partnerships to enhance profitability without necessarily entering the sector alone.
The company's financial recovery from past engine issues and the pandemic's impact has been swift, as indicated by a five-fold rise in operating profit in the first half reported in August, bolstered by increased maintenance prices and strict cost management.
