Edenbridge Bonfire Society has chosen an effigy of London Mayor Sadiq Khan to burn during their annual bonfire night. The effigy, which was publically picked, depicted Khan holding signs related to the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (Ulez) and the £15 London New Year’s Eve fireworks event.
The society uses celebrity effigies to add humor to the event and raise money for local causes. This year's choice reflects the public's reaction to the Ulez expansion, which affects residents and businesses around Edenbridge.
The Ulez, which charges drivers of polluting vehicles entering the zone, has been extended to cover all London boroughs and aims to improve air quality. Mayor Khan commented earlier on the success of Ulez, indicating a rise in compliant vehicles.
The bonfire event also featured a parade and carnival procession. Past effigies have included political figures and celebrities.
